New Course Now Available on Marching Arts Education

I need to start this off by thanking everyone who has been a follower and supporter of Spintronix for the past decade and a half. What started out as a small town color guard camp has absolutely blown up beyond my wildest dreams. This year our competition team will be heading to DAYTON, OH for our very first attendance at WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.

It’s because of your support - watching our YouTube videos, following our social media accounts, and ESPECIALLY OUR PATRONS ON PATREON! It’s because of the support you bring to the table that I have been able to build this resource and offer it now to prospective performers and instructors all over the world. So thank you, from the bottom of my heart, you spinthusiasts are the best followers in the world!

This course is something I have spent years preparing. It started with simply posting instructional videos on YouTube, then refining my own teaching approaches both in person and online. In the past 15 years I have taught at more than 100 camps and clinics at various schools across the continental US (plus a couple in Brazil!), created thousands of videos online, and directed the Spintronix Indoor Guard competition team - all while holding down a full-time position as a biology professor at the public high school and local university. I have a master’s degree in educational curriculum and instruction (and a second one in biomedical science because why not?) so I began thinking of and designing how I would want to present a course like this online about five years ago. I applied everything I learned in both the education and performing arts realms and now present to you the fruits of this labor.

My hope is that you use the information presented here and you run with it. You use it to teach flag spinning to students on your own teams, entice other students to join, give your band director some perspective on what it’s like to do color guard… And in the process you create a culture of understanding, respect, and caring for one another that pushes us to always be our best - but understand that our best can look different under various different circumstances.

Another anecdote that I want to share with you all is the appropriateness of this day for the release of the course. I didn’t even know it until I opened my Facebook memories this morning, but today 14 years ago was the day I finished the first draft of my first book. It was a YA fiction story about color guard, planned to be the first in a series of 25 books that I published under a pen name just in case it wasn’t very good. I ended up publishing the first two books of the series before deciding that my time would be better spent on other projects. The books are still available on Amazon of course if you want to read them, but like I said I’ve moved on to different projects. It would take a LOT of positive reviews to pull me back to my desk as an author haha!

Thank you once again for your support. It’s because of you that I have been able to do this for so long, and it will be because of your continued support that I can keep creating more resources like this in the future!

Sincerely,

Jackie Brown
